tagline: helping veterans one cast at a time

Providing Veterans with an opportunity to experience the joys of fly fishing, fly tying and all other aspects of the sport to support their physical and emotional wellbeing.

Freedom On The Fly combines the tranquility of fly fishing with the camaraderie shared among military veterans. We recognize the significant need for healing and the unique challenges veterans face. By bringing together available resources and support, we believe that every veteran can find a path to peace. By embracing the peaceful and reflective nature of fly fishing, we offer veterans a sanctuary to reconnect, find solace, and rediscover a sense of belonging within a community that understands the depth of their experiences.

Our Story

Freedom On The Fly is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to serving those who have served our nation. We are an all-volunteer organization, fueled by our passion for this sport and our commitment to honoring those who have sacrificed for our country.

Our volunteers, who are veterans themselves, have experienced the therapeutic benefits of fly fishing firsthand. Through our organization, veterans have discovered the tranquility, sense of accomplishment, and renewal it offers during their journeys of transition and healing.

Our Journey

Freedom On The Fly started with a clear realization: the need to support military veterans is growing. Healing is important, and this challenge is significant. By connecting available resources and services, we believe that every service member or veteran can find a way to achieve peace.

The Therapeutic Recreation Journal in 2020 found that “Fly-fishing provides a dramatic distinction between the trials of combat and the calming effects of sharing natural environments with like-minded companions in pursuit of elusive wild fish.”

What We Do

We offer a range of programs, from monthly events to sponsoring fishing outings throughout Texas. Our events are held on the first Friday and third Saturday of each month, with additional fishing outings scheduled throughout the year.

These programs are not just about the activities themselves but about creating a supportive community where veterans can share their stories, struggles, and successes.

Impact

Freedom On The Fly’s programs have had a significant impact on the lives of many veterans. Those who have joined our community report notable improvements in their mental health, a renewed sense of purpose, and a stronger connection to the world around them.

Our activities offer not only physical challenges but also moments for quiet reflection, opportunities for mentorship, and the joy of learning new skills alongside peers.

TESTIMONIALS

What Vets Are Saying…

I’ve been privileged to be part of an organization dedicated to vets, as well as giving back to the community.  The activities around fly fishing are just the cherry on top!  This group of men and women is an example of the best of the best.  I’m honored to be part of this organization.
